Our History & Legacy

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) was established on 1934 in New Delhi, with the objective of promoting, organizing, and developing the sport of badminton across the nation. As the sole national governing body recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, BAI is affiliated with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC).

Over the decades, BAI has been instrumental in transforming badminton from a recreational activity to a professional sport that produces world-class athletes. The association has played a pivotal role in India's badminton successes, including Olympic medals, World Championships, and Thomas Cup victories.

BAI's headquarters are located at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex in New Delhi, from where it coordinates national and international activities, player development programs, and grassroots initiatives.

Governance & Structure

Executive Committee

The BAI is governed by an elected Executive Committee comprising a President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, and members representing various zones. The current President is Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the Secretary is Mr. Sanjay Mishra. The committee meets quarterly to formulate policies, approve budgets, and oversee operations.

Sub-Committees

BAI has specialized sub-committees for coaching, selection, technical officiating, tournaments, finance, and development. Each committee consists of experts and former players who ensure efficient functioning. The Selection Committee, chaired by Mr. Pullela Gopichand, is responsible for selecting national teams for international events.

Constitution & Policies

BAI operates under a comprehensive constitution that outlines its objectives, membership criteria, election procedures, and code of conduct. The association adheres to the National Sports Code 2011 and follows transparency in financial management. Key policies include Anti-Doping, Safeguarding, Gender Equality, and Player Welfare. All documents are available for public scrutiny on request.

Annual General Meetings (AGM) are conducted where state associations present reports, and audited financial statements are approved. BAI is committed to good governance practices, ensuring accountability and growth of badminton in India.

Annual Tournament Calendar

BAI's calendar includes over 50 tournaments annually: National Championships (Senior, Junior, Sub-Junior), Ranking Tournaments, State Championships, and International events hosted in India. The association also coordinates India's participation in BWF World Tour events, Thomas & Uber Cup, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. Tournaments are conducted under BWF laws, with certified referees and umpires. Online registration is mandatory through the BAI portal. Prize money for national events ranges from INR 10 lakhs to INR 50 lakhs, ensuring financial incentives for players.

National Ranking System

BAI maintains a transparent national ranking system based on performances in designated tournaments. Points are awarded according to the level of tournament (National, Zonal, State). Rankings are updated monthly and determine selection for national camps and international exposures.

Development & Grassroots Programs

BAI Academy Network

BAI has established a network of 15 regional academies across India, in partnership with SAI and state governments. These academies provide world-class coaching, sports science support, and education for talented players aged 10-18. The flagship academy is the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.

Each academy follows a standardized curriculum designed by BAI's coaching committee. Scholarships are available for economically disadvantaged players.

Coach & Official Education

BAI conducts regular certification programs for coaches and technical officials (umpires, referees). Courses are offered at Level 1, 2, and 3, accredited by BWF. In 2022, over 300 coaches were certified, enhancing the quality of training at grassroots.

School Badminton Program

In collaboration with the CBSE and state education boards, BAI has introduced badminton in over 5000 schools. The program includes equipment donation, teacher training, and inter-school competitions. Aimed at identifying talent early and promoting physical activity.

Women in Badminton Initiative

To promote gender equality, BAI runs specific schemes for female players, including separate training camps, maternity support policies, and leadership workshops. The association targets 40% female participation in all programs by 2025.

Infrastructure Development

BAI allocates funds for upgrading badminton infrastructure nationwide. Recent projects include synthetic court installations in rural areas, lighting systems for evening play, and wheelchair-accessible facilities. Associations can apply for grants through the Infrastructure Development Scheme.

India Wins Historic Thomas Cup 2022

May 15, 2022 | Press Release

The Indian men's team created history by winning the Thomas Cup for the first time, defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the final. This victory, orchestrated by captain Kidambi Srikanth and coach Pullela Gopichand, marks a golden era for Indian badminton. BAI congratulated the team and announced a cash reward of INR 1 crore.

The win has inspired a surge in badminton participation across the country. BAI is planning a nationwide celebration tour.

BAI Signs MoU with Sports Authority of India

September 10, 2023 | Announcement

BAI and SAI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation in talent identification, coaching, and sports science. The five-year agreement will provide enhanced support for elite athletes and fund new academies in northeastern states.

The MoU includes provisions for anti-doping education, injury prevention programs, and psychological support for players.
